Reader’s Question:

I have a driver’s license in Kentucky, but I do not have a vehicle. I have been driving my brother’s car. He has car insurance, but I am not listed on the insurance policy as a driver. Can I still drive his car? What’s going to happen if I get involved in an accident?

If you are operating your brother’s vehicle with any kind of regularity, you should be listed on your brother’s policy as a driver. Otherwise, your brother runs the risk of having the insurance provider deny coverage for a claim if you get involved in an accident while using that vehicle. As a result you and your brother can be held accountable for that accident. If your brother does not add you to that policy as a driver, to protect your interests, you may consider buying a ‘named non owner’ insurance policy. This policy will provide coverage for liability, uninsured motorist, medical payments and coverages for someone who does not own a vehicle and will be operating a vehicle owned by someone else.

SR22 Auto Insurance – Cancellation or Non Renewal?

Q: What is the difference between cancellation and non-renewal of SR22 auto insurance?

A: Cancellation of your SR22 auto insurance is something which can be done any time, and is not restricted to simply the end of your policy period. However, some legal restrictions surround cancellation, and your policy can only be canceled if you don’t make a payment, your license is suspended, you misrepresent yourself or omit information, or continuing to insure you would violate the law in some way. If your company cancels you for a reason other than this, then you can file a complaint.

As for non-renewal, it can be done for any reason, but is also subject to a few restrictions. For example, your policy cannot be non-renewed simply because you are part of a protected category–that is to say, it cannot be non-renewed on the basis of your race, disability, gender, ethnicity, and so on. Your SR22 auto insurance company is not allowed to deny you coverage because you have no credit/bad credit, but it can charge you more for these two reasons. Also, your car insurance company can choose not to renew your policy for risk reasons or because you have not paid.

How Do I Get a Cheap SR22 Insurance Rate Quote?

Q: Is it possible for someone to get a cheap SR22 insurance quote on a new car they have bought?

A: Yes, it is possible to get a cheap SR22 insurance quote on a new car, but how cheap the quote will be depends on the kind of car you have recently bought. If you have a sensible, mid sized, economic car that wasn’t too expensive and had a good safety rating, then you have the best chance of getting the cheapest  quote. For any other car, though, you’re going to have to get some dirt under your fingers.

For anybody who owns a new car, of any type, your SR22 insurance quote can be cheapened by taking on more risk, which can be done by raising your deductibles. Every piece of extra coverage you have beyond basic liability has a deductible, which must be paid in the event of a claim before your car insurance company pays the risk. Let’s say you right now have a $500 deductible on all coverages. Your monthly premium will be high because your car insurance has most of the risk responsibility. If you raise it by a thousand dollars or more, though, your monthly insurance premium will be lower.

1. Raise your deductible amount to as high as you can

2. clean up your credit rating – poor rating equals higher insurance costs

3. join a credit union and ask them if they have insurance discounts – most do
