I live in Florence, Kentucky and got a speeding ticket for doing 55 in a 35. I am only seventeen, is it necessary to have my parents go with me to the court? How many points will be removed from my license?

Robert

It is six points on your driver’s license for speeding 16 to 25 mph over the speed limit on any public highway or road. Receiving six points will likely get you a notification from the Division of Drivers Licensing and you may be requested to show up for an interview.

If you are required to appear to an interview, the Kentucky Transportation representatives will know if a State Traffic School program would benefit you as a motorist.

You will have to check with the clerk of the court’s office in Florence, Kentucky , or other entity listed on your citation ticket, to check if your parents need to show up with you at court. They will likely since you are seventeen and thus a minor.

Reader’s Question:

I have a 16 year old teenage son and I was wondering what grade point average he needs in the state of Kentucky to qualify for a car insurance discount?

Bill

Louisville, KY

I am not aware of that grade point average that someone has to carry in order to be able to have car insurance in KY. What I do know is that KY does have a form of the No Pass, No Drive law in Kentucky though that authorizes the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet to have administration regulations regarding a young or minor driver licensing applicant.

This administration regulation, requires participating schools to inform the Transportation Cabinet if a minor is academically deficient or withdraws from school. Therefore as a 16 or 17 year old and you drop out of a participating school or deemed to be deficient academically, you will lose your driver’s license.

Reader’s Question:

If I received a DUI in California can I still obtain a driver’s license and auto insurance in Kentucky?

Marla

Louisville, KY

If you received a driving under the influence (DUI) conviction in California you might be able to obtain a driver’s license in Kentucky. Typically, a fist time DUI offense in CA has penalties such as jail time, vehicle impoundment, fines, license suspension for 6 months or more, and a completion of a DUI program.

If you have dealt with the penalties given to you for being convicted of the DUI in CA and have taken care of any licensing issues already regarding the DUI, then Kentucky would likely permit you to obtain a license.

According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Division of Driver Licensing, they check the NDR to determine if a motorist’s driving privilege is suspended in other state prior to a license being issued. If a motorist is suspended, a KY license will not be issued until that suspension is no longer in effect.

Looking For Non Owners Auto in Insurance Kentucky?

Reader’s Question:

I have a driver’s license in Kentucky, but I do not have a vehicle. I have been driving my brother’s car. He has car insurance, but I am not listed on the insurance policy as a driver. Can I still drive his car? What’s going to happen if I get involved in an accident?

Jean

Louisville, KY

If you are operating your brother’s vehicle with any kind of regularity, you should be listed on your brother’s policy as a driver. Otherwise, your brother runs the risk of having the insurance provider deny coverage for a claim if you get involved in an accident while using that vehicle. As a result you and your brother can be held accountable for that accident. If your brother does not add you to that policy as a driver, to protect your interests, you may consider buying a ‘named non owner’ insurance policy. This policy will provide coverage for liability, uninsured motorist, medical payments and coverages for someone who does not own a vehicle and will be operating a vehicle owned by someone else.

Can I Add Learner Permit Driver to My Auto Insurance Policy?

Q: Can a person with a learner’s permit be on my auto insurance policy?

A: Anybody can be added to your auto insurance policy within reason, and if the person who is getting the learner’s permit is related to you or lives with you, then it may even be necessary. Everybody who has some kind of driving permission must drive an insured car, and regardless of age or learning status, if they are pulled over while uninsured, they will suffer the consequences, which in some cases could include not being able to get their driver’s license when they turn 16. If you have someone with a learner’s permit who is living in your house and you don’t name them on your policy, then if they ever get into a car accident, your company would be able to deny their claim. Your company could also cancel your policy as soon as they found out.

If you want to add a young driver to your car insurance policy but don’t want to pay outrageous rates, you can put them to work on getting discounts. Your new driver should be enrolled in a general driver’s education course, and you can enroll him or her in a defensive driving course as well and be provided with a discount for it.
