Reader’s Question:

How long does an inexperienced motorists rate apply to insurance companies in Kentucky?  I am a new driver and my auto insurance rates are higher than I was expecting them to be.

Jeff

Louisville, KY

Each insurance companies in Kentucky is different in their rating factors; this includes their insurance rates for inexperienced and young drivers. For some auto insurance companies it is three years for others it can be 5 to 9 years that an insurance company will term and rate someone as inexperienced.

Some companies do not look at the date that the driver was first licensed at all, but use their age as the only rating factor. When the age of the driver is the thing being looked at, typically a motorist under the age of 25 is considered inexperienced.

If you have just recently received your driver’s license you should shop around for car insurance to find the best insurance rates for your car and level of experience behind the wheel of it.

Reader’s Question:

I currently live with my father in Ohio and have my vehicle insured under his insurance. In a few months I am moving to Kentucky where I will be going to college. Can I stay on my fathers insurance, as that is where my permanent residency is or do I have to obtain my own insurance?

Kathy

Lexington-Fayette, KY

This differ from insurance provider to insurance provider. Most insurance carrier will continue to insure you on your father’s policy if you will be attending school in the same state. Other companies will continue to insure you if you attend school in another state. Some insurance companies will not insure you if you will be attending school in another state. Your father should contact his insurance agent or insurance carrier to determine what their guidelines are.

Reader’s Question:

If I received a DUI in California can I still obtain a driver’s license and auto insurance in Kentucky?

Marla

Louisville, KY

If you received a driving under the influence (DUI) conviction in California you might be able to obtain a driver’s license in Kentucky. Typically, a fist time DUI offense in CA has penalties such as jail time, vehicle impoundment, fines, license suspension for 6 months or more, and a completion of a DUI program.

If you have dealt with the penalties given to you for being convicted of the DUI in CA and have taken care of any licensing issues already regarding the DUI, then Kentucky would likely permit you to obtain a license.

According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Division of Driver Licensing, they check the NDR to determine if a motorist’s driving privilege is suspended in other state prior to a license being issued. If a motorist is suspended, a KY license will not be issued until that suspension is no longer in effect.

Can you explain what a Guest PIP in Kentucky is?

Richie

Louisville, KY

Guest PIP is a type of coverage that must be bought if basic PIP has been rejected by the insured’s listed on an insurance policy. The state of Kentucky is a “choice no-fault” and this means that a driver can choose to insure their car under the tort system or the no fault system.

According to the Kentucky Department of Insurance representative, in Kentucky when you buy auto liability coverage you also buy PIP coverage for you, your family and guest passengers (choose the no-fault system).

Usually, guests are defined as those in your car that are not immediate family members. Normally, additional PIP is not afforded to a policy that includes Guest PIP coverage only.
